Work undertaken so far - following an access audit completed by 3 Disabled People

  • Created 2 Disabled Parking Spaces - with signage
  • Purchased 2 portable hearing loops - one to one and conference loops
  • Training Room fitted with hearing loop
  • Developed signage; in Macaton and white on black as a visual aid
  • Removed an inner stud wall which reduced access
  • Obtained building quotes and developing further architects plans
  • Carried out Health and Safety audit including Internal risk assessment
  • Identified Fire alert systems at an accessible height level
  • Contacted DCIL to try to access database on funding
  • Ordering of signage at the front of building
  • Purchase of reception chair
  • Decoration in varied tones and colours to distinguish rooms and room surfaces
  • Refurbishment of Room 6 in line with access audit
  • Initial costings for Braille project

Work programme for Access

Phase 1 (June - Dec 2003)

  • Developing a buddy system for people who are visually and hearing impaired so that they can be assisted in the event of fire and publicise escape strategy in reception
  • Architects drawings for new accessible toilet, identification and obtaining of funding and installing of new toilet.
  • Architects plans for refurbishment to simplify layout of the building
  • Entrance-level car parking area, ramp, rails and Braille sign, new weather mat, transitional lighting
  • Investigate costs for automatically operated door
  • Widening internal doorframes and install new glass panelled doors with fittings and door hinges to ensure full access to Community Resources Library, training room and meeting room
  • Braille internal signage
  • Development of reception area to include induction loop
  • Installing of temporary ramps
  • Consult architects on possibility of developing 2nd floor and site lift
  • Identify funding for phase 2

Phase 2 (Jan - June 2004)

  • Obtain finance to simplify layout of the building and widen corridor to improve manoeuvring, and install permanent ramps and visual alarm system
  • Handrails along internal corridors
  • Widening internal office doors
  • Lobbying for improvements in access from the Train Station
  • Improve outside lighting
  • Decorate corridors to improve visibility
  • Seek planning permission and finance to develop second floor

Phase 3 (June - Dec 2004)

  • Build 2nd floor with lift access

This area of work will be led by Kevin with support from Gina, Peter and Jim Seddon and the Access Groups
