SPODA
SPODA is an organisation
that offers support for parents, carers and families of drug
mis-users and is mainly funded by DAAT (drug alcohol action
team) with other funders including the single regeneration budget,
primary care trust and communities against drugs.
SPODA offer a seven
day help line which provides the caller, who may be in crisis,
with support and information. Often a client may wish to have
a one to one meeting with one of the support workers; which
can take place at their home or at an alternative place. There
is also support groups for clients who feel they would benefit
from meeting others and sharing their experiences. SPODA can
also offer clients support in court and during prison visits.
Many people, who
are living with drug misuse in their life, often feel very isolated
because of the stigma surrounding drug misuse. SPODA support
workers meet with the clients on at least three one-to-one sessions
before they are encouraged to join a group session. There are
also plans to offer a bereavement service for parents. It is
to be called FLYT (friend listen you talk).
One of the other
ventures is to provide more in the way of respite care for clients,
taking them away from the stresses and strains of their daily
nightmare, such as to the theatre. "We feel the best quality
for this work is empathy and, to a degree, some life experience
of living with drug misuse in their own family. SPODA was originally
formed by Parents who encountered these exact difficulties."
